When the pandemic hit the US, I found myself struggling with larger compositions. I then started working on these small paintings, which got me through the year.
As the scholar Juanita Feros Ruys writes, “The concept of acedia does not have an exact modern counterpart, but for desert monks it encompassed spiritual weariness, disgust at the solitary life and the tedium of the desert, and a desperate desire to return to the world, or at least to hold a conversation with another human being.”
